Photo of the Day (12-17-08)

Filed under: Arts and Culture, Peru, Photo of the Day

Sam bottoms

It’s not usual that a person’s handiwork makes Photo of the Day two times in one week. This week Lola Akinmade’s shot of this woman in Peru caught my attention. How could it not? Isn’t that vivid red gorgeous?

I also love the way the purple of the woman’s shawl pops against it and how the other reds are just enough of a difference to be distinct. This is a perfect example of the principles of a color wheel.

If you have your own examples of popping colors, send them our way at Gadling’s Flickr Photo Pool. One or two could be chosen as a Photo of the Day. Just ask Lola.

Somalia’s president ’sacks PM’0

The Somali President, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, has sacked PM Nur Hassan Hussein and the interim government.

At a news conference in Baidoa, the president said Mr Hussein, who was sworn into office in November 2007, had failed to bring security to Somalia.

The move follows tension between the two in recent months over attempts to deal with the Islamist-led opposition.

However Mr Hussein told the BBC the president alone did not have the power to remove him from office.

Somalia has not had a functioning national government since President Mohamed Siad Barre was overthrown in 1991.

The current transitional government, faced with an insurgency, is dependent on international aid and Ethiopian military support to function.

Speaking in Baidoa, the seat of the interim parliament, President Yusuf said: “As of now, I have sacked the prime minister and his current government and I will nominate a new prime minister within days.”

“The government of Nur Hassan Hussein was unable to perform its duties and I am obliged to save the country,” he said.

The president said he was confident that parliament would approve his decision.

Strains

Mr Hussein responded by saying the president had no power to discharge him and his cabinet.

“When it comes to the dismissal of the prime minister, he has no power,” he told the BBC Somali service.

“Any step that he wants to take with the prime minister, he should in fact inform and ask the parliament to take that action.”

Relations between the president and his premier have been strained in recent months, particularly over reconciliation efforts with the Islamist-led opposition.

The rift between the two leaders has spread to parliament, where supporters of President Yusuf have previously threatened to pass a vote of no confidence in the prime minister.

20th century fox

The president said the dismissal would not harm a UN-sponsored peace process, which aims to bring the country’s more moderate Islamists back into the fold.

Mr Hussein was appointed prime minister in November to replace Ali Mohamed Ghedi, who had refused to negotiate with armed Islamists and other opposition groups.

Mr Hussein was seen as a neutral figure who would make competent prime minister.

Child’s skull found; Caylee home to be searched0

ORLANDO, Florida (CNN) — Authorities cordoned off the home of missing toddler Caylee Anthony’s grandparents on Thursday, hours after the remains of a small child were found nearby.

Investigators stand near the area where the skeletal remains were found Thursday.

Investigators have sealed off the Anthony home, which shows a large Caylee poster.

The sheriff’s office in Orange County, Florida, said it is seeking a warrant to search the home of George and Cindy Anthony.

Sheriff Kevin Beary said the home has been secured "pending more investigation." The house has the "possibility of being more of a crime scene later," he added.

A child’s skull was found at about 9:30 a.m. by a utility meter reader who alerted authorities, sheriff’s spokesman Jim Solomons said. Investigators download comedy, including those from the Anthony case, rushed to the download crime movies scene, he added.

CNN affiliate WFTV reported that the meter reader picked up a plastic bag at the site and a skull fell out. The remains have been removed by the medical examiner and will be sent to the FBI lab at Quantico, Virginia, Sheriff Beary said.

The agency has told its lab analysts that the case is top priority, Beary added. "If they have to work through the weekend, they’ll work through the weekend."

"Bottom line, it’s real simple, folks," Beary said. "We’ve recovered this human skull, it appears to be that of a small child, and now the investigation continues. We’ve got a lot of lab work to do, a lot of DNA work to do, a lot of crime scene work to do. We could be here all night."

Prosecutors have asked police not to disclose many details surrounding the discovery, Beary said.

The Saddest Christmas Songs

Pajiba Music

The Five Saddest Christmas Songs

Seriously Random List XXXIV / Mrs. Pajiba-hyphenate

We all need an antidote to the over-the-top forced jollity of holiday songs, most of which are better known for their ability to become lodged in your brain than for their quality. For every song as beautiful and sweet as “Silent Night” or “Christmas Must Be Tonight” there are seemingly 20 versions of “Jingle Bells” blasting from every available speaker this time of year. It’s enough to make you want to join Grandma underneath those reindeer hooves. And as much as I love a rousing “Good King Wencenslaus,” I realize that a) I am in the minority on that one, and b) sometimes the intensity of holiday cheer in these songs collides headlong with the reality of challenging family members, exhausting social obligations, and impossible-to-execute recipes. I find it helpful to remember that northern Europeans celebrate holidays at this time of the year because it is incredibly cold and dark. So while you may be contending with a sense of postmodern ennui as you brace yourself for another round of festivities, keep in mind that many of our forebears spent this time of year in mortal terror that the sun was never going to return.

So in that spirit, here are my favorite songs to remind you that the holidays aren’t uniformly pleasant for anyone, and that if you’re feeling ambivalent this season, you’re not alone.

Honorable Mention: “Fairytale of New York” — The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl

5. “Christmas Time Is Here” (Theme from “A Charlie Brown Christmas”): A lot of people find the holidays difficult precisely because there is such pressure to be happy, and for everything to go perfectly. That stress, combined with the sense that everyone else is having more fun than you, can make the holiday season feel interminable. This song describes the joys of the season, but to me the children’s voices sound somewhat world-weary, and the downbeat tempo seems almost unnaturally slowed-down. A great song to keep it all in perspective and to remind you of the profundity of Charlie’s forlorn little tree.

4. “Not Dark Yet” — Bob Dylan: My least literal of the bunch — yes, I realize this isn’t a Christmas song. At all. But it makes me feel like I’m trudging along some sidewalk at twilight, facing the wind, watching the twinkling of colored lights on the snow.

3. “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” — Traditional: This is kind of a sleeper — it’s not one people think of as sad, but listen to the words and delivery and trust me: If you’ve left the house on some pretext involving replenishing the nutmeg just to get away from the flaming turkey/drunken houseguest/horror that your family has become, when this song comes on at the Quik-Mart, you may find yourself in tears before you know quite what’s going on.

2. “A Long December” — Counting Crows: This song totally captures that strange mix of hope and regret that can accompany the end of another year. I remember driving around in the snow with a good friend singing it at the top of our lungs when it first came out. Makes me want to go smoke a cigarette outside in the cold.

1. “River” — Joni Mitchell: Incredibly gorgeous, evocative and painful, this is so good that it’s become a kind of alternative standard, finding its way onto holiday albums by artists from James Taylor to Aimee Mann. I still love Joni’s original, but my first year in college I listened to it so much that its actually tough for me to hear now. If you’re up for some thoughtful wallowing, pour yourself a drink and listen to Robert Downey, Jr.’s uniquely devastating version.

Real Change…

…is repudiation of the no-nothing-ness of the past. From Bloomberg:

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) — President-elect Barack Obama said the nation owes its military veterans “a sacred trust” and named retired four-star General Eric Shinseki to make the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs “a 21st century” system.

“No one will ever doubt that download comedy this former Army chief of staff has the courage to stand up for our troops and our veterans,” Obama said at a press conference in Chicago, held on the anniversary of the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. “No one will ever question whether he will fight hard enough to make sure that they have the support that they need.”

Shortly before the 2003 U.S. invasion download crime movie to oust Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, Shinseki told Congress it would take several hundred thousand troops to stabilize postwar Iraq, more than then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld had estimated.

Rumsfeld roundly rejected Shinseki’s assessment, insisting the effort could be accomplished with a U.S. commitment of no more than 150,000 troops. He also cut short Shinseki’s tenure as chief of staff, which critics of the Bush administration said was punishment for Shinseki’s testimony.

Dye for Bailey?

hey all, still here. not much going on in reds realm, which makes me fairly apathetic to anything reds related…you know…since there isn’t anything to talk about. but now we got something, hal mccoy says we traded bailey for dye.not too trusty how i feel about this to be honest. my first question is: was it a 1 for 1 deal? if so, i’m pretty much ok with losing bailey, even but i fall in the give-him-on many occasions-he’s-only-frickin-22 camp. substance i’m ok with the job, but still fairly worried this allot will come back to haunt reds fan’s blogs/minds in the course of the next 15 years.if someone else sober-sided remotely functional in the next 3 years is included, this deal makes me grovel a bit. however i’m to the point with this together that i’m tired of waiting in the interest of things to go right. this seems to be the susceptibilities i perturb from other reds fans, we’re dog-tired of waiting. one thing we haven’t had the last 8 years: a young core to build around (i.e. volquez/cueto & bruce/votto), this has at least made my reasonable side satisfied, but the manhood of me straight wants the reds to have a winning season no incident the cost. so in that regard i’m ok…unbiased ok, with the deal. keep in disposition dye also equals two draft picks when he leaves.eat one’s heart out story short, i good-looking much don’t worry either way if this deal is true, but if it is i hope it was 1 for 1 (yes i achieve that’s doubtful). how’s that for some good blogging, ugh.update: rumor not true? (via mlbtraderumors.com) thanks mccoy by reason of tricking me into writing that entry. this will not be forgotten…..
