Five technologies that make me thankful
5. Internet radio: When I graduated Vanderbilt in 1996, there was basically no way that I could follow the school’s football and basketball teams, except by looking up the final scores online. Now, I can hear free radio broadcasts of every single game that isn’t on national TV (which, for Vandy, is most of them.) It connects me to my school and it connects me to my friends from school.
4. Facebook: As someone who doesn’t much like long telephone calls — or even long e-mails — it has always been hard for me to stay in touch with distant friends. Facebook makes it almost effortless. Each person updates his own status every few days and that flow of information lets me keep track of everyone. Best of all, it has helped me get back in touch with folks I haven’t seen in years, folks I really liked but had let slip from my life.

3. HD DVRs: High definition makes every show better. The DVR lets you watch them when you want and it lets you skip the commercials. Editorial: Ending street racing
Triad highways likely will be safer this Thanksgiving, thanks to the N.C. Highway Patrol’s recent crackdown on street racing in Guilford and Forsyth counties. Said by some to be the largest such crackdown on the East Coast, Operation DRIFT (Don’t Race in Front of Troopers), which is still under way, had led the patrol, by Tuesday afternoon, to serve warrants on 45 people and to seize 12 vehicles connected to street racing on North Main Street in High Point and on U.S. 311 in the two counties. But whether Operation DRIFT will have a lasting impact remains to be seen.

The Pitchfork 500: Panda Bear: “Bros” [Stream]
So, we have a new book out, The Pitchfork 500: Our Guide to the Greatest Songs from Punk to the Present, published by the Simon & Schuster imprint Fireside Books. It explores our 500 favorite songs from 1977-2006– interspersed with sidebars on the most vital subgenres from electro to grime to riot grrrl– to construct an alternate history of the past three decades of popular music. In the coming weeks we’ll be posting streams of tracks from the book here in Forkcast and giving you a sneak peek at some of the entries.
